I recently went to see Lulo Rheinhardt perform at the Stables in Milton Keynes and was blown away by his performance. It was a performance with the incredible classical guitarist Yuliya Lonskaya that mixed gypsy jazz with classical guitar. I came away from the gig very inspired and wrote a new piece called 'Flamenco Gitano'.
I had been actually started to write this piece about 2 years ago but for some reason could not finish it. Seeing the amazing talents of Lulo and Yuliya really inspired me and the next day I finished the track in one sitting. I must say I am really pleased with it - it is not the easiest piece in the world to play, but flamenco pieces rarely are. Yesterday I did a recording of it on my wonderful Pete Howlett/Paul Mansell Student Ukulele - and it really shows of the ukulele at its very best.
I am going to publish the music for this piece in an upcoming book of my compositions that I am currently about half way through. It will be the follow up to my book 'Modern Pieces for Ukulele' and I am hoping it will see the light of day in 2025. It will feature some classical, jazz, ragtime and flamenco pieces - suitable for all levels of players. In the meantime, here is 'Flamenco Gitano' for you to enjoy.
